REVIEW: Halloween at Conifox – Family Fun by Day, TERROR by Night ★★★★☆

Pumpkin picking, fairground rides and family-friendly Halloween fun by day.

Fireworks lighting up the sky as evening arrives.

Then darkness, creepy clowns and people deliberately trying to scare the living daylights out of you by night.

Halloween at Conifox has two VERY different personalities.

I was invited along to Conifox Adventure Park near Kirkliston to experience both sides of its Halloween offering — the family-friendly Halloween Festival and, once the children have safely disappeared, TERROR Scream Park.

And despite taking place at exactly the same venue, they're two completely different experiences.

🎃 Halloween Festival

During the day, Conifox transforms into an autumnal playground filled with pumpkins, Halloween decorations and activities aimed firmly at families.

Naturally, the pumpkins are the stars.

There's something ridiculously satisfying about wandering through rows of them trying to find the one, despite knowing perfectly well you're going to take it home, hack bits out of its face and leave it outside in the Scottish weather.

The whole site embraces the season, creating plenty of opportunities for those obligatory autumn photographs alongside activities and entertainment for younger visitors.

There's a lively atmosphere and enough happening to turn pumpkin picking into considerably more of a day out than simply choosing one and heading home.

However, this is also worth bearing in mind when budgeting.

Once additional activities, rides, food and everything else that inevitably comes with a family day out start being added, the cost can quickly creep upwards.

So it's worth looking at exactly what's included in your ticket before visiting — particularly if you're taking several children who possess the remarkable ability to spot every single thing that costs extra.

🎆 Ending with a bang

One of the highlights comes as daylight begins to disappear.

Rather than simply packing up your pumpkin and heading home, the Halloween Festival finishes with a fireworks display, giving the day a proper finale.

After hours of pumpkins, Halloween activities and family entertainment, watching fireworks burst across the autumn sky is a lovely way to round everything off — and makes the experience feel much more like a complete Halloween event rather than simply an elaborate pumpkin-picking trip.

Overall, it's a fun way to embrace Halloween without anything becoming genuinely frightening.

Enjoy the pumpkins.

Take the cute photos.

Watch the fireworks.

Because once they're finished and darkness properly falls...

Conifox changes.

😱 TERROR Scream Park

Let's establish something immediately.

This is not the bit for the kids.

TERROR takes the cheerful daytime setting and turns it into something considerably more sinister, with scare attractions, roaming performers and live entertainment creating an atmosphere before you've even entered a maze.

The 2025 event featured three main scare experiences:

Blackout.

Sadistic Circus.

And the wonderfully named Redneck Rampage.

Each has its own theme and style of scares, meaning you're not simply walking through three variations of the same haunted house.

And because photographs aren't permitted inside the attractions, I'm not going to ruin them by describing every scare waiting around every corner either.

That's half the fun.

Or trauma.

Depending on your perspective.

Blackout plays with perhaps the simplest fear of all: not being able to properly see what's around you.

Turns out your imagination becomes remarkably creative when you're wandering through darkness knowing full well somebody is being paid to scare you.

Sadistic Circus, meanwhile, confirms something I've suspected for years:

Clowns do not need any assistance becoming terrifying.

And Redneck Rampage brings a completely different kind of chaotic energy, making the three attractions feel distinct rather than repetitive.

The actors are crucial to making TERROR work.

A scare attraction can have all the elaborate sets and effects in the world, but if the performers aren't committed, you can see every scare coming.

Here, they throw themselves into it.

And the fact that the scares aren't necessarily confined to the mazes means you never feel entirely safe wandering around the wider event either.

Lovely.

🎃 By day or 😱 by night?

The clever thing about Halloween at Conifox is that it manages to cater for two completely different audiences at the same location.

If you want pumpkins, activities, fireworks and a fun autumn day out with the family, the Halloween Festival ticks the boxes.

If you'd rather spend your evening voluntarily paying people to chase and terrify you...

Firstly, questionable life choice.

Secondly, TERROR is considerably more your thing.

Neither experience is perfect — particularly once you start adding up the cost of a full family day out — but both deliver what they're designed to do.

And experiencing both really demonstrates just how dramatically the atmosphere at Conifox changes once the sun disappears.

Cute pumpkins at lunchtime.

Fireworks at dusk.

Terrifying maniacs after dark.
