REVIEW: & Juliet The Musical | UK Tour 2024 | Edinburgh Playhouse

This week, I was invitied along to the Edinburgh Playhouse again for press night of the musical & Juliet. This captivating jukebox musical offers a fresh take on the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, mixing lively music, comedy, and emotional richness. Having heard about its catchy tunes and imaginative storytelling, I was eager to experience this modern retelling of Shakespeare's iconic story.

A New Twist on a Classic Tale

“What if Juliet didn’t end up in tragedy?” This central question powers & Juliet, allowing the audience to witness a new version of Juliet Capulet's story. In an age where women are encouraged to shape their narratives, this empowering twist feels fresh and relatable. Instead of succumbing to a fatal end, Juliet asserts her own desires and ambitions, offering a brave new direction.

The show kicks off with Juliet reflecting on what she wants beyond a tragic romance. This launches us into a whimsical journey filled with familiar pop songs by renowned Swedish songwriter Max Martin. Tracks like "Oops!... I Did It Again," "Teenage Dream," and "I Kissed a Girl" are reminders of youth and freedom, bringing a new and exciting energy to the stage.

Catchy Tunes and Catching Vibes

The integration of pop anthems into the storyline is particularly impressive, creating a smooth flow between dialogue and song that keeps the audience engaged. The cast - comprising both seasoned actors and newbies - delivered powerhouse performances that had everyone clapping and cheering.

One highlight was Anne, played by the remarkably Lara Denning whose exuberant performance as William Shakespeare's wife was spectacular. She commanded the stange with her perfect comedic timing and utterly impressive pipes! Her rendition of Celine Dion's That's The Way It Is brought tears to my eyes and cheers from the whole auditorium!

Lavish Production Values

The breathtaking set design and choreography are a standout feature of & Juliet. Bursting with vibrant colours and imaginative staging, the production brings Juliet’s world to life. Every scene is visually bold, bright, and beautiful, complemented by choreography that highlights the joy, anger, and heartbreak throughout.

Empowerment and Self-Discovery

& Juliet goes beyond catchy tunes and dazzling performances. Its storyline challenges traditional depictions of women in literature by placing Juliet at the forefront. She explores love, friendship, and, most significantly, what it means to live for herself rather than another person. As well as revolving around a heterosexual love story, there’s a lovely tone of queer joy throughout this show.

Closing Thoughts: Why do we have to follow the script?

& Juliet is a celebration. This musical is a brilliant mashup where classic meets contemporary. A tale as old as time meets modern day songwriting, delivering a show that is both heartfelt and exhilarating. With powerful performances, dazzling visuals, and music that will stick with you long after leaving, & Juliet is an essential experience for theatre lovers.
