REVIEW: Larry Dean - Dodger | Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024

"Engaging, entertaining, a master in mimicry... a pure legend!"

The three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, two-time star of Live at the Apollo, and one hell of a comedian bossing the Scottish comedy circuit, returns to the Fringe this year with his new show Dodger.

Larry Dean is my favourite “dafty” and here’s why.

In his show, Larry effortlessly blends his outstanding observational comedy with affection and charm whilst regaling stories of his beloved Granny, his Brummie boyfriend, and his diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum. He’s Level 1 with a certificate to prove it to anyone that thinks otherwise!

With razor-sharp comedic timing and a mesmeric stage presence, Larry has the audience giggling and guffawing from the get-go. An engaging and entertaining performer, and a master in mimicry (just ask his mum), it won’t be long before Larry Dean will be known across the country.

Before I roundup this review, I’m going to get a little personal – I don’t normally because I like to be unbiased, but I just have with Larry.

I’ve been a fan of his since he performed his second solo show, Farcissist, at the Fringe back in 2016.

As well as everything mentioned above, Larry is genuinely one of the nicest people on the Scottish comedy circuit – I’ve been skittering about comedy clubs in Edinburgh for year!

When we walked into the venue (Monkey Barrel Comedy - MB3) for his show, I was genuinely shocked and surprised to see Larry standing at the entrance. Shaking hands and giving hugs to every single person that walked through the door. This already made the night for me. I was there with my cousin (who is now a fan too) and we couldn’t stop talking about how such a small gesture made such an impact on us.

Larry, you are an exceptional human being…and a pure legend!

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE

For three weeks in August, the city of Edinburgh welcomes an explosion of creative energy from around the globe. Artists and performers take to hundreds of stages all over the city, presenting shows for every taste. Venues can be anywhere, from existing theatres and concert halls to repurposed spaces like bars, parks, buses and shipping containers. The Fringe street events bring colour, excitement and vibrancy to outdoor areas, free of charge.

From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival spans every genre of live performance, including theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, a registered charity, is the company that organises the structure that underpins the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The level of commitment required for such an undertaking would not be possible if it weren’t for the enthusiasm of the people of Edinburgh, combined with the longstanding support of our audiences, sponsors, supporters and the goodwill of the Fringe Friends and Angels.

The Fringe Society strives to provide support that exceeds participant and public expectations, and we ask you to join us in supporting this challenge. Every penny you give makes a difference, helping us to develop the services we provide for performers and audience.

There are a number of ways of supporting the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, from one-off donations to becoming a Fringe Friend.
